The Committee will take the utmost care in handling the work but cannot be responsible for loss or damage.
To ensure quality and originality, work will not be accepted that is:
- a copy of the work of others;
- made entirely from a kit or commercial design; and/or an article made entirely from a commercial mold.
All pieces must be dry and ready to be displayed. All unframed artwork needs a hanging sleeve or loops/ rings on the back of the work.
Work is to have been completed within the last five years.
Work must not have been previously shown in a public, commercial or juried exhibition.
For the protection of both people and work, each piece must be able to be carried easily by one person, and fit through a standard door.

Just in time for St.Paddys, the Pat Chessell Band will be firing up Blue Frog Studios for a foot-stomping good time. Known for his high energy performances, Chessell performed more than 200 times in 2011 alone, as well as being the featured act in the Irish Pavilion during the 2010 Winter Olympics. His passionate, smoky vocals are complemented by Celtic fuelled sounds that stretch into influences of roots, blues and country. 2008 saw the release of a live album entitled ‘Live and Lusty’. In February 2012, Chessell released his debut single – ‘Drunk In Exile’ – which was co-written by Chessell and Tiller’s Folly’s Bruce Coughlan.

The White Rock Public Library is now open Sunday afternoons year-round

The White Rock Public Library will now be open on Sunday afternoons year-round as a result of White Rock City Council approving the 2013 – 2017 Financial Plan.

Traditionally, the library has only been open on Sundays from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. between Thanksgiving and Easter, which would have meant that the library would close on Sunday afternoons starting April 7, 2013 until Thanksgiving. With the new hours in effect, the library will now remain open on Sunday afternoons all year-round.

“The White Rock Library provides an important service to our community,” said Mayor Baldwin. “Extending their hours to include Sunday afternoons throughout the entire year will enable more residents to take advantage of this local resource.”

Councillor Helen Fathers, the City representative on the Fraser Valley Regional Library Board, has championed the idea for some time now.

“It has been a pleasure working with the FVRL over the last four years,” said Councillor Fathers. “I hope the new Sunday afternoon hours will allow library users that extra time to enjoy all that our library has to offer.”

“I would like to thank the City of White Rock for opening the library year-round on Sunday afternoons,” said David Thiessen, Manager, Township of Langley and White Rock Libraries, with Fraser Valley Regional Library. “I am very pleased with this decision, as I have received far more requests from White Rock residents for this increase in hours than I have for anything else.”

The White Rock Public Library offers a wide variety of books, magazines, CDs, videos, and programs to satisfy all ages. In addition to book clubs, author readings and regular Philosopher’s Café, it also offers a regular drop in chess club, laughter yoga, and a large assortment of adult and children’s programs.

White Rock BC is planning to go green in March – all forty shades of green!

Semiahmoo Arts and the Irish Club Of White Rock, coordinating with other local organizations and businesses, have planned a month-long White Rock Irish Festival. The Festival is the response to the city’s challenge for ways the arts community might better support the local economy.

The festival will offer events appealing to the 15% of BC residents who claim Irish ancestry, or their spouses – or visitors to Ireland who would like to rekindle vacation memories. Planned events will touch on every aspect of Irish culture – music, song, dance, poetry, literature, language, cuisine and dress. Semiahmoo Arts will screen the Irish movie, A Shine Of Rainbows as part of their Get Reel series in March.

The classic children’s movie, Darby O’Gill And The Little People will be screened as a special family event. Classes will be held throughout March for those interested in learning the Irish Language, or the basics of playing the Irish Drum (bodhran) or the Irish Whistle.

Irish dancing classes for adults are planned. Presentations on tracing Irish ancestors will be included in the Festival, with the possibility to book one-on-one appointments with a BC Genealogical Society expert on Ireland. White Rock Library’s Titles & Tea Book Club will discuss Sebastian Barry’s The Secret Scriptures at their March meeting.

The Irish Poetry Night at Slainte Gastrobar By The Pier will feature the poetry of Nobel laureate, Seamus Heaney. The Festival will include travel talks on Ireland and Irish tours.

In addition to regular folk music entertainment, participating restaurants will offer special events such as whiskey tasting, cooking demonstrations, and bread baking contests. St Patrick’s Day will be a special celebration of course, with dinner dances being organized by the Irish Club of White Rock and by the Kent Street Activity Centre. There will be an activity virtually every day in March appealing to the little bit of Irish in everyone! The organizers hope that the White Rock Irish Festival will be a success and become an annual event.

Semiahmoo Arts is very happy to see the Arts Community being acknowledged and are happy to see White Rock City Council re-affirm White Rock as an Arts Community.

Well-known figures on the local Arts Scene will be acknowledged and celebrated at next Monday’s Council meeting. Among those being honoured are Elizabeth Hollick, George Zukerman, Chris MacClure, Spiral Dance, Don Hutchinson, Serge Dube, Sheila Symington, Jim Adams, Deborah Putnam, and Dave Baron. Examples of their artwork will be on display.

Others in the arts community are welcome to attend this special event taking place at the White Rock Community Centre (15154 Russell Ave), Monday Feb. 4 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm.

Breakfast eggs offer ‘better protein’ satiety benefits: Study

Breakfast eggs that deliver high quality protein may better boost satiety, research has found.

The American Egg Board-funded study found that eating high quality protein (eggs) for breakfast leads to greater satiety and a lower calorie intake at lunchtime than a lower quality protein (cereal) breakfast.

It was presented at the 19^th European Congress on Obesity in Lyon, France, last week.

A previous study by the same researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center demonstrated that an egg breakfast, compared to a bagel breakfast of similar calories, increased feelings of fullness and reduced food intake at lunch.

However, it did not examine whether it was the amount or type of protein that may have contributed to the findings.

“In the previous study we did not match the macronutrient content of the two breakfasts like for like, so we did not know whether it was the protein content that was responsible for the findings,” lead researcher Dr Nikhil Dhurandhar told Nutraingredients.

In the latest study the quality of protein distinguished two breakfast meals that were nearly identical in the amount of calories and protein provided.

“We matched the two breakfasts in terms of weight, calories, and the percentage of carbohydrate, protein and fat, so that the main difference was the source of protein,” said Dr Dhurandhar.

Golden eggs

He explained that with a biological value (BV) of 100, eggs are considered the golden standard for protein, because they provide all ten essential amino acids. Therefore, the egg breakfast supplied high quality protein while the cereal breakfast provided lower quality protein (wheat protein has a BV of 42).

20 obese men and women aged between 18 and 60 took part in the randomised, crossover trial. Each subject had to eat one of the breakfast meals for a week, followed by a ‘wash-out’ week, before eating the other breakfast meal for a week. During each breakfast week, on days one and seven the participants were also offered lunch three hours after breakfast. On these days the researchers collected data via blood samples and questionnaires and covertly measured how much participants were eating during lunch.

Participants reported feeling fuller following the egg breakfast and tests of their hunger hormone levels supported their self-reported observations. When tested after eating the egg breakfast, levels of the hunger signalling hormone ghrelin were significantly lower and levels of the hormone that signals fullness, PYY, were significantly higher. In addition, the actual food intake of participants was considerably lower during the egg breakfast week than during the wheat breakfast week.

“I was surprised by the results, because these breakfasts were so close to each other they were almost identical,” admitted Dr Dhurandhar. “The results indicate that protein quality, not just quantity, may affect satiety.”

The findings are currently under review by an unnamed peer-reviewed journal.

Spirit of the Sea 2012!

For most, it was a weekend of sunshine, a whiff of freshly roasted hot dogs and the sight of brilliant fireworks overWhiteRockBeach. The vendors gleamed with excitement with every intrigued visitor they could entertain and the people paced the promenade with exuberance and delight. Some would call it a “weekend to remember”, full of tradition, great live music and definitely some debut events for White Rock!! Starting out with scorching hot weather and a highly populated beach, the Spirit of the Sea Festival kicked off with a bang!

Setting up among the White Rock promenade and watching as the festival began to take shape, I saw the beach turn into a different place. The sun, which shone all but too bright, was the perfect means of motivation for early morning set up that Saturday. Tents sprung up around the walk way, curving around the museum and down the other side of the beach. Neighbors would loan one another a helping hand where it was most needed. At this point I was both a spectator and a worker while different businesses around caught my eye. My own personal neighbors included Mike Lang, Acupressure and Colombian Culture, a booth that proved to be one of the event’s greatest hits with specialty drinks, dancing girls and loud Spanish music!

As day moved along, we were frequently visited by many festival-goers. I watched as our raffle boxes began to fill and our fellow vendors on the block consistently attracted attention. I was also able to get away from the working tent and participate in the culture of the event as a regular White Rock inhabitant. Cruising down the promenade I passed by some familiar faces and some event-specific companies. I was tempted by one of White Rock’s favorite bakeries, Tracycakes, coveting their beautiful cupcakes, and stopped in for an Uli’s burger that kept with the restaurant’s high standard. Along the museum, the sand sculpture artist worked his magic, depicting a whole scene of sand in front of a growing crowd!

The entertainment at all three stages was a contributing element to the Festival’s success. West, East and Spirit stage each had their own performances that included music, fashion shows and other various performers. I was able to catch a show at West Beach just in time to watch Cleopatra strut her stuff with Julius Cesar. The Spirit Stage featured many young, local singer-song writers who performed for a crowd of friends and fans in the quaint Semiahmoo Park.

On the following day, the Festival continued to burst with just as much energy as the previous day. People started their day early to watch the Paddle Board races. Anyone could spot the intensity of the race from a distance. The competitors included such racers as our own Mayor, Mr. Wayne Baldwin!

After another day of sunshine and culture, the people of White Rock were treated to a traditional firework show over the clear beach sky! The bright colours of the fireworks mimicked the excitement of the people. That they call the festival a “weekend to remember” seemed an accurate description to me as I watched the weekend conclude with passion!
